Our client Laura’s daughter, Ava, just turned 18 years old. Ava has Down syndrome, and although she is currently attending high school, she cannot communicate well, cannot read, does not drive and needs help with her hygiene. Ava’s father died in a car accident when she was just a baby, and Laura has been raising her on her own.
Now that Ava is legally an adult, she also needs assistance with signing documents to continue to be enrolled in school and help with other daily tasks. Legal Aid of Manasota was able to assist Laura in being appointed Guardian Advocate for her daughter, granting Laura the ability to ensure Ava maintains a healthy social environment, stays safe from being taken advantage of, and that she can continue to advocate for Ava’s needs throughout her adult life.
