Sally, a senior citizen, lived with and cared for her mother in her mother’s home in Manatee County for many years. When Sally’s mother passed away she left the house to her three children.
One of our pro bono attorneys opened a probate case to get the house in the names of the heirs—it had previously only been in their mother’s name. Once that process was completed, Sally’s siblings wanted Sally to have the house as she had been the main caretaker of their mother for so many years and had nowhere else to go. A second pro bono attorney prepared a quit claim deed so that the house could be transferred solely into Sally’s name.
Now, Sally is eligible for the full homestead property tax exemption which will lower the property taxes to a manageable level allowing her to continue to live in her home.
